Global Health holds a press conference on the latest developments in the Corona virus.. Wednesday

The World Health Organization is holding a press conference via video on Wednesday, June 7, on the developments of the Corona virus pandemic and the launch of vaccines in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. The conference will discuss the developments of the Corona pandemic in the region, and the health situation in Iraq. Speaking at the conference are: Dr. Rana Hajjah Director of Program Management, World Health Organization, Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean

Dr Richard Brennan, Regional Emergency Director, WHO, EMRO, Dr Ahmed Zouiten, WHO Representative in Iraq, and Dr Abdel Nasser Abu Bakr, Head of Infection Risk Management Team, WHO EMRO

For his part, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, announced that it is now clear that there will be no large-scale recovery without ending the health crisis, stressing that access to vaccination has become a necessity.

He said: Impressive progress has been made in the field of vaccination, scientists have come up with multiple vaccines in record time, and unprecedented public and private funding has supported vaccine research, development and manufacturing, but there is still a serious gap between rich and poor countries.

In fact, even while some rich countries are already debating the release of booster injections to their populations, the vast majority of people in developing countries — even frontline health workers — have not yet received their first dose. Low-income countries are the most served and those that have received the least of 1% of vaccines administered so far.

He pointed out that the unfair distribution of vaccines not only leaves countless millions of people vulnerable to infection with the virus, it also allows the deadly variants to emerge and rebound again around the world, with the continued spread of variables, even countries with advanced vaccination programs were forced to re-impose Stricter public health measures, and some implemented travel restrictions. In contrast, the ongoing pandemic deepens the divergence in economic fortunes, with negative consequences for everyone.
