A study issued by Indiana University revealed that there is a protein inside the stomach that plays a major role in the development of obesity, through which treatment techniques can be found to achieve and maintain weight loss, according to what was reported on the Medical Express website.
The researchers pointed out that a protein called GKN1, a protein produced exclusively in abundance in the stomach, is resistant to digestion, allowing it to pass into the intestine and interact with microbes in the intestine.
The researchers found that inhibiting the protein GKN1 led to large differences in weight and levels of fat in the body, which means that controlling levels of this protein at low levels contributes to weight loss and fighting obesity.
The study showed that by examining the good bacteria in the intestine called the microbiome, the researchers explained how our bodies regulate the metabolism and accumulation of fats in the body, which could help in introducing new treatments for obesity.
The researchers conducted an analysis on the role of the protein GKN1 and beneficial bacteria in the intestine, by monitoring and measuring the metabolism and levels of calories and triglycerides, compared to the levels of this protein in our bodies.
The researchers found that the study sample of mice that did not contain the GKN1 protein were lighter and had lower levels of total body fat and higher proportions of lean mass, despite consuming the same amount of food when following a high-fat diet, as shown. This stomach protein free sample is resistant to weight gain and excess body fat.
The researchers emphasized that when controlling levels of GKN1 protein, the body can resist obesity, which poses a threat to the health of the individual, and leads to serious diseases such as cancer and fatty liver.
This comes after statistics issued by the US Centers for Disease Control showed that the rates of obesity in adults rose to 42.4% in the United States, in addition to an increase in the individual's risk of stroke, diabetes, some types of cancer and other health problems.
