A report by Insider newspaper revealed that at least 43 people in the Canadian province of New Brunswick had an unknown brain disease that causes convulsions, memory loss and hallucinations, and according to the report, public health officials believe that five people have died from this disease.
"We haven't seen over the past 20 years a group of neurodegenerative diseases that are resistant to diagnosis like this," said Michael Colehart, president of Health Watch Canada.
He added that the cases were discovered after the Public Health Agency sent a note to local doctors asking them to monitor patients suffering from symptoms of the rare "Creutzfeldt-Jakob" brain disorder, but the tests excluded Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, as the patients first showed symptoms in the form of contractions, then they were infected. Drooling and cracking teeth.
Neurologist Dr Alier Marrero said the patients came first with pains, cramps and changes in behavior however, given that these symptoms are associated with a number of health conditions, this was not a major concern.
He added, "Symptoms developed into impaired cognitive abilities, muscle wasting, drooling, and broken teeth. Some of these patients also had disturbing hallucinations, such as insects crawling on their skin."
The researchers performed a series of brain imaging and toxicological tests to ensure that brain disease was not a known neurodegenerative disorder.
Researchers collaborate with different national groups and different health experts to find out what it is and how it occurs.
