A US team performs the first double lung transplantation on a patient infected with the Coronavirus

A Chicago hospital announced that doctors successfully performed the world's first double lung transplantation on a patient infected with Coronavirus using donor organs who recovered from the disease. Life support equipment and a lung transplant.

The lungs came from a donor who had previously tested positive for the virus, but had only had mild symptoms - and recovered - before his death.

"This is a milestone for lung transplantation," said Dr. Ankit Bharat, assistant professor of surgery at Northwestern University who performed the lung transplant, in a statement.

The patient, a man from Illinois in his sixties who works in the health care field, was infected with the Corona virus for the first time in May 2020, and in the end he became so sick that he was placed on oxygen machines, to pump the patient's blood and feed him with oxygen outside the body, allowing the heart and lungs to rest, And in February 2021, the patient was transferred to Northwestern Medicine, where he was placed on the transplant list.

Lung transplants are more difficult for Corona patients, due to the severity of the damage that the virus inflicts on the organs, in addition to that, doctors have to wait for the virus to cleanse the body while making sure that the patient's organs do not fail.

The team that performed the surgery tested the donor's lung fluid to ensure that it cleared the virus after a lung biopsy.
