Like today.. the Egyptian national team tied with the Netherlands and the justice of the sky descends on Palermo Stadium


On this day, June 12, 1990, the Egyptian national team played its first match in the World Cup, and the first since the 1934 World Cup in Italy as well, when the Egyptian team, led by the late coach Mahmoud El-Gohary, faced the mills of the Netherlands, the 1988 European Champions.

 

The late General Mahmoud El-Gohary started the match with a formation consisting of: Ahmed Schubert “Al-Ahly” goalkeeper, Hani Ramzy “Al-Ahly” Libero, Hisham Yakan “Zamalek”, Rabie Yassin “Al-Ahly” defense heart, Ibrahim Hassan “Al-Ahly” right back, Ahmed Ramzy. Zamalek, left-back, Magdy Abdel-Ghani, "Piramar Portugal", Ismail Youssef "Zamalek" in the center of the defender, Ahmed Al-Kas "Olympic" in the center of the striker, Hossam Hassan "Al-Ahly", Gamal Abdel Hamid, captain of the team "Zamalek", the heart of the attack.

The first half ended with the two teams tied without goals, and in the 58th minute, substitute Wim Kift scored the first goal for the Netherlands after he replaced Vannenburg at the beginning of the second half.

 

Hossam Hassan succeeded in obtaining a penalty before the end of the match, from which Magdy Abdel Ghani scored the only goal of the Pharaohs in the World Cup in Italy, so that the voice of the late Mahmoud Bakr, the match commentator for Arab television, called the phrase “the justice of the sky” on the grounds of Palremo Stadium.

 

El-Gohary made two changes at once in the 69th minute when Magdy Tolba, Adel Abdel Rahman replaced Ahmed Ramzy and Gamal Abdel Hamid, respectively, to end the match with a tie for the two teams in one of the major surprises of the tournament.

 

Egypt is the record holder in the number of times to win the African Cup of Nations with 7 titles, followed by Cameroon with 5 titles, Ghana with 4 titles, and Nigeria with 3 titles.

 

The last culmination of the Egyptian team was the African Cup of Nations title in 2010 in Angola, and for the third time in a row after 2006 in Egypt and 2008 in Ghana.
