The project on the use of technology in food security was selected among the top 5 projects


The “Information and Communication Technology for Comprehensive Societal Development in the Field of Agriculture” implemented by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has achieved a global achievement by choosing it among the top five pilot projects in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prize competition for 2021, which is an effective mechanism. To evaluate projects and activities that use information and communication technology to drive sustainable development.

 

The project aims to use information and communication technology applications to spread specialized agricultural knowledge in the Arabic language in Egypt and the Middle East among more than 21 million users, manage specialized knowledge bases through agricultural experts, and use smart knowledge applications to provide agricultural services based on information and communication technology in support of the state's efforts. In improving agricultural production, achieving food security and increasing farmers' income.

 

The project was launched by the Central Administration for Community Development at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in cooperation with a number of partners, including the United Nations Development Program, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Environment, the National Research Center, the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Sudan, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, And the "Qaryat Net" project of the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the International Development Research Center.

 

The project consists of three integrated pillars that include the “Our Land” portal, which is concerned with establishing the importance of knowledge for the development of society, as well as establishing a sustainable mechanism for the production, management and updating of Arabic content presented in the agricultural sector, in addition to strengthening knowledge-based partnerships and building a knowledge society.

 

The project also provides an online expert systems service, which is a software system that relies on artificial intelligence in simulating human experience through which inquiries, answers and solutions to agricultural problems, whether for farmers or agricultural extension workers, are answered more quickly in order to improve agricultural production and thus contribute to overcoming the problem of food security in Egypt.

 

The project also encourages the introduction of advanced smart applications using the latest technologies for smart water management, which includes conservation and protection of groundwater resources by managing and collecting data from IoT sensors on wells in targeted urban areas, monitoring and analyzing water consumption patterns, and supporting decision-makers with a timely dashboard. It is noteworthy that the project was selected among the five most voted projects in the WSIS Prize competition after strong competition with 360 pioneering projects in 18 categories in the fields of development, and among the 1270 projects nominated for the award in the category of international and regional cooperation, after passing the final stages of voting.
