A study issued by Harvard Medical School said that eating 5 meals of fruits and vegetables a day may reduce the risk of death from cancer and many diseases, given the health benefits that people get from fruit sources, according to what was published on the Insider website.
The researchers emphasized that eating fruits and vegetables on a daily basis is not only beneficial to your general health, but the results of the study found that people who eat two meals of fruit and three servings of vegetables per day have a lower risk of death from certain diseases.
The study found that people who ate five servings of fruits and vegetables a day had a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, cancer and respiratory disease, compared to those who did not.
The researchers emphasized that eating more than five portions of fruits and vegetables did not provide significant benefits compared to eating five portions.
The researchers relied on two sets of data, the first includes a study of more than 100,000 people and the other included 26 studies that included nearly two million people, as the results of the study concluded that leafy vegetables such as kale and citrus fruits such as berries have more health benefits compared to starchy vegetables, at the same time. Peas, corn, fruit juices and potatoes have not been linked to a reduced risk of death, with the need to avoid white foods such as white potatoes.
Despite the health benefits that come from eating fruits and vegetables, only one in 10 adults eats the recommended number of servings, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
